PrEP and risks

Hi all,

I have been taking PrEP since July of 2021, and have been taking it religiously (1 a day, daily). Recently I have had casual sex with a man (Not really considered risky, just mutual oral and a short bout of protected sex) but have been having symptoms such as the flu, swollen tonsils etc.

I was wondering how effective PrEP was and whether or not HIV transmission was possible even if someone was on PrEP?

Thank you!

  1. Hi , thank you for your question! We are not medical professionals and can't comment too specifically on treatments and risks, however, I'm glad to hear that you're taking your PrEP every day. That is great! This article has some great information on PrEP, including the stat that it is 99% effective in preventing HIV when taken as prescribed, https://h-i-v.net/test-types

Of course, there is still that small possibility of getting HIV while on PrEP (or if PrEP is not taken as directed), but practicing other risk reducing methods, like using protection during sex as you mentioned, can be helpful! If you are worried about your risk of HIV considering your symptoms, it is never a bad idea to get tested just to be sure. I hope this answer was helpful! -Casey (Team Member)

    1. Alafia (Peace) Casey has shared a really good resource. I think you will be tested at your next PrEP appointment. The symptoms can be caused by other things as well. Thank you for reaching out to us. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
