Good Energy

I had a conversation with a colleague the other day that really resonated with me, and I would like to share it with all of you. This conversation made me think about my views on karma and how your actions one day can be a deciding factor in your future.

I try to always treat everyone I am around with the same love and respect that I wish to receive back.

A work trip to Atlanta

I work for a very large non-profit organization made up of almost 800 employees with various departments. A few years back my team and I went on a work trip to Atlanta, Georgia for a biomedical conference.

At the time, we had a new member on our team who was not new to the organization, but new to their role on our team. I remember that many of my colleagues did not welcome the new member as much as they could have. I feel like they were all use to their usually team and did not care to work with this new person.

I remember they all went out one night during the conference and did not invite our new member. Instead of me going out with them, I stayed back and hung out with the person they left behind.

At the time, I did not think anything of it. I wanted to get to know this new person and what brought them into the field of sexual health and education. I can honestly say we had a great conversation, and we were able to open up about our journeys both professionally and personally.

Lost contact, but not sight

Fast forward a few months later, the individual got a new position in a different department, so we lost contact due to them being at another site. Fast forward 2 years later and here we are now.

I just recently had an interview for a higher position within the organization and the individual who I stayed back with years ago was on the panel of interviewers. Once I saw them, I knew that they would be able to acknowledge how genuine I was and be able to speak on my work.

Shortly after my interview they talked to me about how they remembered our conversation in Atlanta, and how much passion I had for my community and the work that I do. They also shared with me that I would be a great asset in this new position.

The energy you give out

What I learned from all of this is how one small thing in someone's life can really determine decisions in the future. I think to myself, what would have happened if I also treated this individual poorly or chose to not get to know them? I do not feel like I would have entered that interview as confident as I did.

I am a strong believer in karma and a believer that the energy you give out, attracts more of the same energy back to you.
