Do soap and water can kill HIV virus

Hi everyone,

I have question about HIV virus transmission. I bought a pair of brand new earrings online. Instead of using alcohol to sanitized it before first time use as I usually do, I just use antibacterial hand soap foam and water to clean it couple times under tap water. Then I spray salt solution for ear piercing on them and my ears before wearing it. My earlobe piercing has been just 2 months and they still bleed a bit when I wear the earrings. Now I’m just afraid of getting HIV from the earrings

In case, if the earrings had HIV on it, can soap, water can kill them? From the day I received package to the day 1st time I tried the earrings was 10 days, so HIV can still alive on the earrings? I read the virus will die in air but I also read the HIV in blood in syringe can live in 4–6 weeks because it not expose to the air. My earrings are wrapped in plastic not expose to the air unless I open to use it,

Please help me to explain this problem. I couldn’t sleep last night because I’m just afraid of getting HIV virus.

Thank you so very much

  1. Hi . A lot of people do not know the specifics of HIV viability and transmission. You mentioned reading that the virus can not survive in the air, but having concerns over the specifics. As noted in this article from our editorial team, "Even in very precisely controlled laboratory conditions with large amounts of infectious HIV particles, the virus does not live for more than a few hours outside of the body. In realistic conditions outside the laboratory, HIV is not expected to live for long at all, making environmental transmission outside the body virtually non-existent:" https://h-i-v.net/myths-misconceptions. Even in plastic, the earrings you mentioned are surfaces that have been exposed to air, outside of the body for multiple days. That said, it is never a bad idea to get tested and learn one's status, even if only to ease the mind. This article from our editorial team looks at the types of tests and the testing windows: https://h-i-v.net/test-types. Hope this information helps. Best, Richard (Team Member)
