Possible transmission risk?

20 months ago, I had a protected sex with female sex worker of unknown HIV status.
I have done an unprotected oral sex (cunnilingus).

I did an ultrasensitive HIV PCR on day 14 which came out negative (undetected).
I did an antibodies test on day 104 which came out negative.

I still feel I am HIV-positive with a delayed window period of that I am a rare case that had HIV from oral sex, and that had a false PCR negative and a false antibodies negative.
That fear boosts whenever I get a fever, diarrhea, or any flu-like symptoms.

Is there a chance I am right?
Also, should I see a therapist?

  1. I am glad you reached out because I am sure it has been stressful tackling these questions. We are not medical professionals and cannot advise you about your personal test results, but I can give you some information that may be useful. As it seems you know, in the case of transmission through oral sex, the risk is at the lower end of the spectrum compared to unprotected vaginal or anal sex. You can definitely learn more about the specifics which may ease your mind through this article: https://h-i-v.net/transmission.

Regarding your testing, you mentioned the window period (these vary based on the test). Typically, people may experience an incorrect result if an HIV test is taken within the first 2 months of a possible exposure; this period of time is called the "window period". However, outside window period (and day 104 would be about 3 months I think), false-negatives are rare. For more information, see here: https://www.aidsmap.com/about-hiv/false-negative-results-hiv-tests.

It sounds like despite the negative results you are still concerned. I personally am a big believer in talking things out with a therapist, although I know it isn't for everyone! I know other advocates here have written a great deal on the subject. I like what shares in this article: https://h-i-v.net/living/find-therapist

I hope this helps. Please keep us posted on how you are doing, we're here for you.

    1. Thank you, , for your reply!!
So based on that rare scenario, do you advise me to test again with an HIV antibodies test?
(now it's been 20 months since that exposure)

      1. Since we are not your medical health provider, we wouldn't be able to advise you on your next steps, however the list in this article gives you a good sense for if you need to test - https://h-i-v.net/testing-who-should

What has your health care provider said about the results? - Liz (Team Member)

    2. Nobody at the testing lab commented on the results or advised me.
I will consider testing again after a months from today because my medical insurance in my current country is still pending.
Anyways thank you so much for your help, !

      1. Alafia (Peace) I totally understand where you are coming from. There is a window period for seroconversion. I would get tested again at three months. Seeing a therapist is such an individual decision. I say if you feel overwhelmed and the desire to speak and share with a professional, go for it. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
