How accurate is my test ?

Hello,

After a condom slippage with a sex worker, i started pep 12 hours after the incident for 28 days. I finished it and did two lab tests (4th generation)
Test 1 : 4 weeks after the last dose of pep (8 weeks after exposure)
Test 2 : 6 weeks after the last dose of pep ( 10 weeks after exposure)
both came back negative.

Do i have to test again in the future or my tests are conclusive ?

Thank you!

  1. There are many testing options if you believe you are at risk of contracting HIV. As we are not medical professionals we cannot interpret your test results but can provide some information. It may be helpful to know that window periods can vary (your doctor can help determine this) - more info on those window periods here: https://h-i-v.net/test-types . This article outlines the window period for 4th generation lab tests, indicating your 2nd test was beyond the 44 days in the window period - https://www.aidsmap.com/about-hiv/how-accurate-are-fourth-generation-combination-tests-hiv-diagnosis .

With that being said, it’s still important to get tested regularly and speak about any symptoms you have with a doctor you trust. I hope this is helpful. - Liz (Team Member)

    1. Alafia (Peace) Raven, I really appreciate your strength in reaching out to us here at H-I-V.net. As LizGreen shared with you, we are not medical professionals. However, what I will share is that I suggest you get tested in another three months. Because there is what is called the window period which is the time of exposure to the time if possible seroconversion. I think Liz mentioned this but getting tested should be a regular part of your general health exam. If you are not seeing a doctor on a regular basis then find your way to a clinic or community health organization to get tested regularly. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
