Is one week of pep is sufficient after having unprotected sex with sex worker (of course I donot know if she had any hiv or stds )?

Hi I slept with a hooker without condom or to be specific the condom is cut or broken then when I stopped to go and buy another one …she told me it is fine I can penetrate and do without condom as she already make test periodically every 15 days and it is for her safety first before me and I already trust her as there is a good situation happens between us and she respects me well but also I asked to get validation as I have ocd and i little obsessed about hiv and I take a pep now only for precaution as I donnot know if she has any hiv or std disease but like you know to be safe than to be sorry and I know it is a stupid thing from beginning But in my country pep is really expensive medicine and in the past I did that and took pep for whole month without being sure if i really need it… i asked someone who I bought the pep from and asked someone that specializesd and told me all you have to do is to take for one week only as the most important period is the next 72 hours and after one week I donnot have to worry about anything and I don’t have to waste all these pills without any meaning or in useless meaningless way So what do you think ?is one week makes in safe side and I don’t have to worry about hiv ?

  1. Hi . Your concerns and desire to be safe is certainly understandable, as is your issue with the cost of PEP. I need to note that we are not medical professionals and, for your protection, cannot offer medical advice. That said, as noted in this article from our editorial team, "PEP is a 28-day course of medicine:" https://h-i-v.net/pep. Other sources, such as here, note that "The recommendation is 28 days. 28 days is the only time that it can be said with certainty that PEP will be most effective. Stopping before this can increase the risk of PEP failing:" https://i-base.info/qa/21399. Each person has to decide for themselves what is the best course of action and hope this information is helpful. Best, Richard (Team Member)
