Rash and HIV Infection?

I'm a massive overthinker so I need to get this off of my chest but over a week ago (11 days) I had a hook up with a guy and it was just oral sex so the risk is still relatively low. However, all of the sudden after over a week I have started getting this extremely itchy rash that comes and goes after few minutes on various locations and then it's fine. It appears on my chest, shoulders, back, neck and face. However, I took PREP on demand (2:1:1 method) but I missed my second dose by two hours.

I feel like it might be hives because the rash becomes very noticeable when I start laying in bed and the rash itching becomes unbearable but as soon as I get out of the bed it stops and disappears with few rash spots left.

What worries me is that the guy told me that he prefers to have sex without condoms and also 'boasted' about it in a way as well as hooking up frequently. I know the only way is to get tested but I still have to wait for at least 3 weeks for HIV to be detectable and I can't stop thinking about it. Other than the rash I have no other symptoms and feel completely fine. I would appreciate any advice/stories and understanding 😀

  1. Hi . It is understandable that an unexpected rash would be unsettling. You are correct that the risk from oral sex is low and this article on risk from on differences in HIV transmission risk goes into more detail: https://h-i-v.net/transmission-risks. Also, you are correct that the only way to be certain of your status is testing. The windows for the various HIV tests differ and this article provides information on them: https://h-i-v.net/test-types. There are many potential causes for rashes and, if you can find a place you are comfortable getting checked, a dermatologist may also be able to spread some light on what you are dealing with. Hoping you can get some answers and relief. Best, Richard (Team Member)
