Unsure

I received unprotected oral sex back in October 2021 and I have been getting inside my head so bad that I am now getting headaches. I have not shown any of the symptoms described everywhere. I’m honestly freaking out and afraid of getting tested

  1. I am glad you reached out because I can tell from your writing you are dealing with so much worry and it can really impact your stress, like you said, getting headaches. HIV can be transmitted through five bodily fluids including breast milk, blood, precum, semen, and vaginal secretions. It cannot be transmitted through saliva, and in the case of transmission through oral sex, the risk is at the lower end of the spectrum compared to unprotected vaginal or anal sex. You can definitely learn more about the specifics which may ease your mind through this article: https://h-i-v.net/transmission .

That being said, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States actually encourages everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 to have at least one HIV test (more here: https://h-i-v.net/diagnosis-testing), so if you've never been tested it might be a good thing to add to your typical medical care. I have heard from others that testing is less overwhelming and that the testing personnel is more supportive than they thought they might be.

I hope this is helpful to you! Keep us posted and we wish you the best.

    1. Thank You So much for your response and encouraging words! I have a full medical coming up in Mid-March as the only “symptom” I’m currently dealing with is the headaches which come and go and but not that strong so it could be myself stressing out about this.

  2. you know your body best and any concerns you have are valid. If you're feeling stressed, it's a great idea to investigate. I'm glad Liz's response was helpful and that you have an appointment coming up next month. Please do keep us updated if you can, and I hope the headaches improve soon! -Casey (Team Member)

    1. Alafia (Peace) I definitely understand where you are coming from. The stigma around getting tested is a big hurdle to get over. I suggest that getting tested may be the only way to give yourself relief from the uncertainty. Please let us know how we can support you through this process. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
