Are symtoms possible in 24 hours?

Dear forum

Good afternoon. I am seeking advice, as I am really struggling with the worry right now.

I have been struggling a lot with alcohol and depression. On Tuesday night I paid for sex, and did not use protection. This is clearly very risky. On Wednesday night the shivers began. Thursday morning I started PEP, and Friday night I had a fairly high fever (but unusually, no runny nose or sore throat like a usual cold).

Should I be worried that this fever is early symptoms of the HIV virus ? I appreciate 24 hours is a short time for the signs to appear, but I have read mixed opinions online

Thank you

Paul

  1. I am so glad you reached out when you are feeling this way. It can be so hard to deal with symptoms without knowing the cause. We are not medical professionals so cannot determine your transmission risk but can provide some information I hope will help. It sounds like you do not know if the person you were with was living with HIV, or if they were, you do not know if they were on medication (if someone is living with HIV and with treatment reaches an undetectable level, they cannot transmit HIV sexually - https://h-i-v.net/clinical/treatment-is-prevention ) .

Are you able to talk to the prescriber who gave you the PEP about the symptoms that developed after you left? And when you saw them, what did the recommend in terms of testing?

    1. Thanks for getting back to me Liz. I will try and get back in touch with the prescriber then and let them know my early symptoms. When I took the pep I was tested there are then which was negative. I suppose it always would be so soon. Apparently you also cannot test during PEP, as it is masked. When I was was given the PEP they also booked be in for a test in 6 weeks, which is the soonest test you can have (a fortnight after completing the month session of PEP). Thanks again.

      1. waiting for that six weeks is not easy, we're here for you if you have any questions! - Liz (Team Member)
