HIV, what are the chances?

I was with a sex worker a week ago and while she was on top she reached out and remove the condom. it was less than 30 seconds before I realized was she has done, and I am very worry if that time was enough to get HIV. I have a sore throat, chills and nausea. I started taking PEP at 77 hours for peace of mind. But I just need some advice.

  1. Hi . I can tell you are concerned. I need to note that we are not medical professionals and, for your protection, cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics. I can tell you that general practice is to start PEP within 72 hours of potential exposure (see: https://h-i-v.net/pep). You are obviously close to that number, but I can't say what difference it makes being around the tail end of the window. I also want to share with you this article on transmission risk: https://h-i-v.net/transmission-risks. You will note that insertive penile-vaginal intercourse has an estimated transmission risk of 0.04% and that is assuming exposure to HIV happened during the act. Of course, these are only estimates and individual circumstances vary. Finally, you mention a few symptoms and it is important to note that there are many potential causes (this article discusses early signs and symptoms: https://h-i-v.net/symptoms/early-stage). Of course, the only way to be certain is through testing and this article discusses the types of tests, with the window periods for accuracy: https://h-i-v.net/test-types. I hope this information is helpful. Wishing you the best. Richard (Team Member)
