A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words: A Giveaway Honoring Long-Term Survivors
National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day is September 18th. No matter if you are newly diagnosed or have been living with HIV for multiple decades, we are proud to welcome you to our online community.
This month, we are launching a giveaway in honor of long-term HIV survivors.
A picture is worth a thousand words
About 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV. Treatment has come a long way since the first cases of the virus were reported in the 1970s. With these improvements, individuals with HIV are living longer, and the impact that HIV has on aging has become an important conversation.
But statistics alone can’t illustrate the impact that HIV has had on millions of people and their families. A picture can be worth a thousand words.
The giveaway prizes
In the late 1980s, Billy Howard, an Atlanta-based photographer, captured photos of people living with HIV and AIDS. These photos, along with notes written by those photographed, were compiled and published into a book called Epitaphs for the Living: Words and Images in the Time of AIDS.
In addition to the book, we are also giving away a handcrafted photo album with spaces for long-term survivors to fill with photos of their choosing—friends, family (chosen or not), loved ones, and themselves.
One lucky winner will receive the prize bundle, including:
- 1 hardcover copy of Epitaphs for the Living: Words And Images in the Time of AIDS
- 1 handcrafted photo album bound with high-quality linen, filled with space for 200 4x6 in. photographs
