Guidance on my exposure

Hello everyone,
On 09-02-22 I had an encounter with a woman who's HIV status I do not know. The act was oral that lasted about 2 minutes.

On 09-13-22 I took a 4th gen HIV antibody and P24 test which resulted negative. Being paranoid about the window period I took an HIV RNA test on 09-20-22. I received my results on 09-23-22 and HIV genetic material was not found.

On 09-22-22 I took a INSTI rapid test at a community site and the result was negative.

Today on 09-23-22 being paranoid I took an OraQuick test which resulted in an incomplete and EXTREMELY faint line on the "T" mark, about 1/4 line.
I had bought a few earlier that week so I took another OraQuick test about an hour later but this time the "T" mark was not there at all.

I am so confused and I am extremely worried. I also feel like I am getting sick. I plan on doing another 4th gen HIV antibody and P24 on Monday.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?

  1. I'm glad you said something, it can be so stressful to be testing and not know the answers. I understand from what you wrote it's been 25 days since you had an oral sex encounter with someone, and you don't know their status. We are not medical professionals so cannot interpret your test results but can give you some information that I hope will help.

First as you know, HIV can be transmitted through five bodily fluids including breast milk, blood, precum, semen, and vaginal secretions. It cannot be transmitted through saliva, and in the case of transmission through oral sex, the risk is at the lower end of the spectrum compared to unprotected vaginal or anal sex. You can learn more about the specifics which may ease your mind through this article: https://h-i-v.net/transmission .

As you've found, there are many testing options if you believe you are at risk of contracting HIV. Since you are only 25 days out you may still be within a 'window period' (your doctor can help determine this). Tests taken after 6 months are typically 99% correct - more info on those window periods here: https://h-i-v.net/test-types

Let us know what happens next and if you have any more information we can point you towards.

    1. Alafia (Peace) scared4life I wonder if your anxiety and stress has been reduced after reading Liz response? We don't know what we don't know. I also know it is hard to wait on results. I hope you find the strength to wait on your test results. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
