Interpreting a rapid HIV test

Hello there.
I have just had a rapid HIV test but I am not sure about the results outcome. I don't know the name of the test. I took an image and it is attached below. Under the control line there is something reddish faint. Is it a negative or a positive test?HIV rapid test

  1. Although we are not medical professionals, I will try to give you as much information as I can. Was this an at home HIV test kit you did on your own? - Steven (Team Member)

    1. Thanks. I had the test done in a medical center. I don't know its brand or name but it is a quick test with a blood sample taken from the finger. The results come out within 15 minutes. I need an interpretation - whether or not the result is negative (non-reactive), positive (reactive) or the test has just to be repeated. Thank you.

      1. As for the picture of this test... was it taken after the 15 minutes or way past the time you should read the test? - Steven (Team Member)

      2. It was taken after 15 minutes.

    2. Hi . Your concerns and stress over trying to interpret a test you are having difficulty reading is certainly understandable. There are multiple reasons that a test could have problems producing a clear result, from time elapsed to sample size to simply a faulty test. The validity of any test also can have issues depending on the window of potential exposure (this article from our editorial team provides further information on types of tests: https://h-i-v.net/test-types). As noted, we are not medical professionals and, for your protection, cannot give medical advice over the internet. Would it be possible for you to take another test (note: even if the result of a self-administered test were positive a medical professional would want to do a confirmation test)? I also want to share with you this other article from our editorial team ways to get tested, including information on home and free testing and places outside a person's regular healthcare circle: https://h-i-v.net/testing-options. Please know that this community is here for you and feel free, if you like, to keep us posted or ask additional questions. Best, Richard (Team Member)

      1. I was told by the healthcare employee that the test was non-reactive. However, I still have my doubts. That's why I took a picture (of course with her permission). It would have been rude to question her like: "Are you sure?" or anything like that. That is why I am asking here.

      2. we won't be able to interpret your results, even with the picture, because we're not medical professionals and wouldn't want to give you any incorrect information. What we can tell you is that many people here have shared their stories of advocating for themselves in the doctor's office and it isn't easy. If you're doubtful or unsure about anything related to your care, you have a right to speak up and ask for clarification. Since you posted, have you had another test, followed up with that clinic, or talked with any other medical professionals? - Liz (Team Member)

    3. Alafia (Peace) We want to check in with you to see if you have gone to a testing organization to get a western blot test conducted? Have you taken steps to get another test? We hope you found the answers you were looking for. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
