Is hiv and low blood cells related?

Hello, I had a white blood cell count of 3.9 but my dermatologist suggest I should do a hep c and hiv test. He said it’s not normal but he asked if I recently used any drug, forgottenly, I told her no when I used antibiotics two weeks or less prior to this wbc count test. Am freaking out because of hiv, any connection?

  1. It's understandable you are feeling freaked out, getting a test you did not expect. There can be many reasons for a low white blood cell count, and so it is good you are addressing it, and I hope you get answers soon. We are not medical professionals but can provide information that may help you. HIV in particular is a condition that impacts CD4 cells (a type of white blood cell) so learning about those may help you in conversation with your doctor - https://h-i-v.net/life-cycle

Like I said, there are all sorts of reasons, but if you or anyone following this thread finds out about an unexpected HIV diagnosis, know that you are not alone and with advanced treatments, there are many here on this site living healthy lives with HIV. Avoid the misinformation that is out there, and come here to ask community members questions! Please let us know how you're doing and how your test goes. I hope you get some answers soon! - Liz (Team Member)

    1. thank you for your response. Yes I was not expecting to be told to do a test. It always freaks me out. I did a test yesterday and my WBC count is normal. The Hep C and HIV tests all came out negative. I was on an antibiotic couple of weeks before the test, guess that affects my blood work. I am sorry if my topic is not related to this forum. Keep up the good work and I am wishing everyone here good health.

      1. thank you Sir! Appreciated
