Not sure if I should get the test

Hi, I’m currently trying to figure out if I should get an HIV test. I had a one night stand about 5-6 years ago without a condom. I don’t remember having initial signs of HIV weeks after but I’m not really sure as it has been years already. I also read that it is possible for HIV symptoms to not show up for years. Would it still make sense for me to have the test now? And what kind of test would be the most accurate if I decide to get one?

Thank you for your help!

  1. Thank you for reaching out. We are not medical professionals who would be able to determine your specific level of risk, but I find this article that breaks down who should get a test really useful: https://h-i-v.net/testing-who-should. If you decide you do want a test after reviewing the list of reasons here, there are a few options for tests which can be found here: https://h-i-v.net/test-types

Finally, remember there are many false messages out there about living with HIV that can feed this anxiety. I know you are worried about a positive result. If that is the case, we can help you connect with a community of many people living with HIV and managing very, very well. I hope you keep us posted on how you are doing and that we can support you! - Liz (Team Member)

    1. Alafia (Peace) I would suggest that you go ahead and get tested. It is recommended that you get tested I think every six months to a year. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
