Oral sex

Accidental cum in mouth, worried about hiv.

I received a small amount of semen when I went down on a guy cum without telling me. I spat instantly but now worried I may have put myself at risk for hiv.

Can anyone help me give advice of wether i need PEP?

Thanks

Very worried in London

  1. , I am glad you reached out with these questions. We are not medical professionals, but I can give you some information that may be useful. It sounds like you are looking for information about transmission risk and making the choice if you should start PEP.

HIV can be transmitted through some bodily fluids like cum/semen like you mentioned. In the case of transmission through oral sex, the risk is at the lower end of the spectrum compared to unprotected vaginal or anal sex. You can definitely learn more about the specifics which may ease your mind through this article: https://h-i-v.net/transmission.

In terms of PEP, here is an article on PEP and how it works: https://h-i-v.net/pep. As this article outlines, you would begin taking PEP up to 72 hours following a potential exposure.

You can find more info on other types of tests here: https://h-i-v.net/test-types.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing, and I hope this information can help you.

    1. Thank you

I saw a medical team at the A and E and they refused PEP as they didn't consider the exposure risky enough, which I suppose is reassuring but I read that is possible to transmit that way so my mind races. I think I'll be the unlucky one. I wish it had never had oral sex and it puts me off ever doing it again

      1. I am glad you got to speak to the medical team. It is understandable that it can get your mind racing, and I'm glad these professionals found it to be low risk. I adjusted some of the answer above to reflect what my wider team here thought about your question, too. It can be really stressful to work through these questions and I hope today you feel a little better. - Liz (Team Member)

    2. Thank you for your support

      1. Alafia (Peace) Were you able to obtain PEP? Fo you go get tested for HIV? Please let us know how you are doing. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)

      2. Alafia (Peace) I wanted to contact you to see if you have gone to get tested for HIV? I know you had concerns since the clinic would not prescribe you PEP. We are concerned and what to hear from you. Reach back out to us when you have the opportunity. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
