Risk for HIV

Hi, I work as a physician but physicians also get worked up and anxious some times. Me and my boyfriend just recently met up with another couple. I had insertive protected sex for maximum of 1 minute followed by unprotected oral sex. The condom slipped and we stopped. My boyfriend only had oral sex. We do not know the other couples HIV status.

2 days after the encounter my boyfriend and I got sore throats and my boyfriend was having fever/chills/cold sweats. We saw another physician and PEP was prescribed. We took 4 days of PEP but I’m not sure if this was really indicated so we stopped it. Can anyone share what to do in this situation? I would appreciate the help, I think the risk is pretty low of getting HIV but sore throat, fever, chills, night sweat kind of scared my boyfriend. Could be gonorrhea.

  1. Alafia (Peace) Thank you for reaching out to us. We are not medical experts but I will share that you most likely should have taken PEP through the end of the script. I think your risk was low as well but I would be proactive and seek testing for STI's across the board. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
