Stuck in Therapy

I am a firm believer in therapy, provided you have the right therapist and all. I have seen different therapists throughout the years. The lady I am seeing now, I do like. I simply feel as though we are stuck on family issues. By saying we are stuck, I mean that I feel like there is nothing left to say on the matter (short of having two family members attend a session - which they will not) and I want to move onto a different topic. Apparently, I am not getting this message across clearly enough to my therapist. I feel as though if we cannot move past this area, I will need to change therapists.

Suggestions? I am open to any advice or your own therapy stories

  1. I have experience on both sides, as a therapist and a patient, and I believe it is a true partnership, so I always learned that if someone I'm working with asks me WHY i'm asking them something, I better have a good answer. Why do you think the message isn't getting across? Do you feel listened to? - Liz (Team Member)

    1. Honestly, I do not think the message was getting across to her. After the last couple of sessions, I walked away feeling like I wasted both of our time.
I actually did a session Friday with a different therapist. This session was also done virtually but at the end of the 50 minutes, I felt like there was a reason I was talking to somebody for almost an hour. I felt heard. It definitely made a difference. The therapist from Friday feels like she can help me and I feel comfortable with her. So, I believe I am just going to walk away from the other therapist. - Heather (team member)

  2. Alafia (Peace) I would ask directly, "Can we take a look at my treatment plan and make some revisions?" Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
