Worried about HIV infection

I had unprotected sex with an unknown person (one night stand) … 30 days later I experienced flu like symptoms, muscle soreness, congestion, which took a month to clear up but still I’m having dry cough and coughing up mucous and phlegm constantly…… there was no rash, no oral thrush, no swollen lymph nodes, but still I’m concerned…. Should I be ?

  1. Hi . I can tell that you are concerned by these new symptoms/issues. That said, you also know that these can be caused by many things and you are missing numerous other HIV seroconversion symptoms (see here for more on the symptoms: https://h-i-v.net/symptoms/early-stage). I need to note that we are not medical professionals and, for your protection, cannot comment on specific risk or potential diagnosis. I do want to share with you this article from our editorial team on estimated transmission risks for particular potential transmission methods: https://h-i-v.net/transmission-risks. Of course, the only way to be certain is through HIV testing, which is why the CDC suggests that testing should be part of regular sexual health monitoring. This article from our editorial team gives an overview of the different types of HIV tests, including window periods: https://h-i-v.net/test-types. Hope this information is helpful and please feel free to ask additional questions. Best, Richard (Team Member)
