How come actors living with hiv don't talk about u=u

Tonight watching The Tonight show seeing Charlie Sheen on there and he even corrected the host the host said how are you doing with AIDS having AIDS and he said no it's HIV but didn't go any further he had a platform to talk about HIV drugs and why he looks so healthy cuz the house commented on how healthy he looked he didn't he didn't give any information other than yeah he has HIV and he looks healthy he had a platform right there to talk to millions of people and let them be informed of you equals you I don't understand why celebrities like him who can spread the word a lot more don't they just don't it's sad because that's why we still have a lot of stigma out here in the world and people who don't understand that we cannot transmit HIV if we are on our pills and that we can live long healthy lives the show touched on him engaging in male sex and that's how we got HIV I think that was kind of another way of putting stigma out there because it's not just that kind of stuff he also did drugs and plenty of them. HIV is not just a gay disease yes the most affected are men who have sex with men but the point is when he had a chance to put it out there about HIV medications and why he looks good and healthy he just didn't. Disappointed me for sure.

  1. Hi . Your frustration and disappointment is certainly understandable. As noted in this article, while there have been "several high-profile cases of HIV involving children, celebrities, and other individuals who didn’t fall in line with traditional stigmatizing beliefs and HIV stereotypes," there is much room for improvement: https://h-i-v.net/stigma. In addition, there are still plenty of comments in the media from celebrities, comics, and people in the public eye that add to the stigma. Our contributor Jah did this video on the need for celebrities and media to do better: https://h-i-v.net/video/celebrities-stigmatizing-comments. I think to the part of the interview you mentioned when Sheen corrected the host on HIV vs. AIDS, that was a perfect opportunity for the host to ask for further explanation and who knows how much great information could have flowed from there. The conversation just shouldn't be that hard. Best, Richard (Team Member)
