Advice on HIV/PEP and possible chances of catching HIV.

Hello everyone,

I had an unprotected vaginal sex with a sex worker and later got to know that she is HIV positive. I am worried a lot that I could have exposed to the Virus and will be HIV patient soon. I'm very nervous about next course of action.

  1. We are not medical professionals and cannot give out specific medical advice. However, we can say that the risk of transmission varies based on if the partner living with HIV has an undetectable viral load (more on "U=U" here - https://h-i-v.net/living/undetectable-untransmittable). When a person takes treatment and is undetectable, the rate of sexual transmission is essentially zero. Not everyone taking treatment is undetectable though, which is why risk can vary.

There are many testing options. Have you explored these yet? I hope this is helpful. Please let us know how you are doing and if there's any more information we can provide. - Liz (Team Member)
