Does reuse of condoms increase the risk of HIV transmission?

16 weeks ago I had sex with a prostitute, during sex I took off the condom to urinate and continued to use it. I don't remember if I put it back on properly, does this matter?. Does my behavior put HIV at risk?
6 weeks ago I had unprotected sex with my wife, she was having a rash on her abdomen, and my wife and I went for hiv combo test negative. It's been 16 weeks for me since the risky behavior. Right now I'm so scared, and stressed, I can't sleep. Is 16 weeks 100% conclusive?

  1. First, it sounds like you are not sure if these partners are people living with HIV, and even if they are, if someone is taking medication and has an undetectable viral load they cannot transmit the virus to others (more on that here: https://h-i-v.net/living/undetectable-untransmittable). If they are living with HIV and not undergoing treatment, condoms are thought to be 80% preventative in heterosexual sex (more on that here: https://h-i-v.net/risk-reduction.)

It may be helpful to know that window periods can vary (your doctor or the counselor where you got the combo test can help determine this) - more info on those window periods here and when you can consider a test conclusive: https://h-i-v.net/test-types. With that being said, it’s still important to get tested regularly and speak about any symptoms you have with a doctor you trust. I hope this is helpful. - Liz (Team Member)

    1. Alafia (Peace) It sounds as if you have some value concerns. I suggest that you get tested again in a few months. I also suggest that after taking the condom off you open a new one to use for the first time. Khafre (H-I-V.net Team Member)
