This is a real scare

I recently had an exposure with a sex worker in Nakhon si Thammarat on 27th February this year (over 4 weeks ago). I wore a condom provided by the sex workers for vaginal sex but not for oral. And I got fever/ muscle aches 10 days later for 5-6 days. Now my lymph nodes ache in armpits and groin. So I’m now i'm Very worried about the possibility of having contracted HIV.

I am currently in Bangkok, 54 year old foreigner.

  1. Hi . It is clear that you are very concerned about potential exposure to HIV. I need to note that we are not medical professionals and, for your protection, cannot provide medical advice. I do want to share with you this article from our editorial team on transmission risks: https://h-i-v.net/transmission-risks. You will note that the risk from insertive oral sex is less than 0.04 percent. Of course, these are estimates and individual circumstances can change the risk. It is understandable that the symptoms you are experiencing are concerning, but there are other potential symptoms you did not mention (see here for early symptoms: https://h-i-v.net/symptoms/early-stage) and there are multiple potential causes. The only way to be sure is through HIV testing. This article discusses the various types of tests, including information on the window for when the tests are viable. Hope this information is helpful. Best, Richard (Team Member)
